The Importance of Encryption for Cybersecurity

by senhasegura Blog Team | Jun 28, 2021 | BLOG

Most people may find it difficult to understand the importance of encryption for cybersecurity, especially since both are designed to deal with cybercrime.

It is important to understand and differentiate the two terms according to their role in technology. In this article, we investigate the two worlds to provide a clear distinction between them.

So, what is the difference between cybersecurity and encryption?

Cybersecurity refers to procedures implemented to protect networks, programs, and devices from unauthorized users.

In contrast, encryption refers to encryption and decryption of encrypted language, that is, only the sender and the intended recipient can decrypt it. Both methods are vital to the security of users’ confidential information.

The two terms may not be clear to most people, as some of them are not sure which field is a subset of the other. We will differentiate and expose these two subjects below.

What Is the Difference Between Encryption and Cybersecurity?

Cybersecurity and encryption are separate concepts, but they are still connected. Cybersecurity refers to maintaining data security, while encryption is a method used to protect confidential information.

Both concepts are aligned and go together for data security.

However, cybersecurity and encryption are two terms that cannot be used synonymously, as they have their differences. The table below highlights the differences between them.

ENCRYPTION CYBERSECURITY
It is a system used to encrypt and decrypt messages that cannot be decrypted by unauthorized users. It refers to various measures taken by organizations or experts to detect malicious activity on networks or devices.
It is a prevention mode through which parties limit access to information by unwanted parties. The code is specific and confidential. It is not always effective in preventing cybercrime, as attackers can still bypass weak security systems.
It is a tool used to improve cybersecurity. It is a complete area, making encryption one of its subsets.
Encryption mitigates cybercrime by using templates designed to encrypt messages. Cybersecurity involves implementing specific procedures to keep data secure.
It takes a more personal approach to cybersecurity as the sender and recipient know each other’s identity. Cybersecurity is not personal as it directs most policies to general users, making it vulnerable to leaks and infiltration.

Encryption, a subset of cybersecurity, is one of the methods professionals use to keep data protected. On the other hand, they say that the two are separate units, in which neither contains the other, but they are not the same. However, both are vital to keeping important information confidential.

As cybersecurity involves risk management, policy, disaster planning, and access control, encryption depends on data confidentiality, authentication, and integrity. They are two separate fields that are equally essential for keeping systems secure.

What is Cybersecurity?

Hacking into someone else’s network means you can access that individual/company’s private data and files. Attackers use system flaws to generate gateways and access confidential information, using them for personal gain, primarily for monetary reasons.

Cybersecurity seeks to protect the integrity of users’ personal information to prevent devices from making room for external malicious attacks.

How Important is Cybersecurity?

Large amounts of data are processed, stored, and transferred daily by individuals, companies, institutions, and governments. Any information is sensitive to stakeholders. If this data falls into the wrong hands, there will be awful consequences.

For example, if another party can access your financial data, they may impersonate you to make transactions, leading to considerable losses of assets. Secondly, financial institutions and governments are the custodians of people’s confidential data. The leak of personal information has serious consequences for the privacy policy.

Cybersecurity is a very important aspect of technology in data integrity issues. Cybercrime is one of the main threats to national security. Therefore, users should pay attention to these attacks.

With the rise of technology experts, scammers, who are experts in the field, are taking advantage of their ability to commit cybercrimes by deceiving unsuspecting users.

Implementing cybersecurity is one way to stop fraud and maintain data integrity.

What is Encryption?

The term encryption refers to the use of secret language to encrypt or decrypt data. The sender and recipient are the only parties that can decode this encrypted information. It is a mechanism mainly used for extra security, which ensures that only the recipient knows the message.

How Important is Encryption to Cybersecurity?

The practice of encryption in security refers to secure information and communication techniques derived from mathematical concepts and a set of rule-based calculations, called algorithms, to transform messages in ways that are difficult to decipher.

These algorithms are then used for encryption key generation, digital signature, verification to protect data privacy, internet browsing, and confidential communication such as credit card transactions and emails.

Encryption achieves several goals related to information security, including confidentiality, integrity, and authentication. Its participation in cybersecurity is a must and very important.

Next, we will see some relevant points explaining the importance of encryption in information security.

Confidentiality

Confidentiality is a top priority when it comes to encryption. This means that only people with the correct permission can access information, and that information is protected from unauthorized access at all stages of its lifecycle.

Data Integrity

In the security environment, integrity refers to the fact that information systems and their data are accurate. Encryption ensures data integrity using hash algorithms and message digests.

By providing codes and digital keys to ensure that what is received is genuine and from the correct sender, the receiver is assured that the received data has not been tampered with during transmission.

Responsibility

In this context, responsibility refers to the confirmation of a message sent or received. This principle guarantees that the sender cannot deny having sent the data.

It uses digital signatures to prevent the sender from denying the data’s origin. Furthermore, it is also a way to ensure that the recipient does not deny receipt of the message.

Data Availability
Encryption also supports data availability, ensuring that individuals with the correct permissions can use systems and retrieve data reliably and promptly. This ensures that information systems are reliable and accessible.

Millions of users around the world use technology in their personal and professional daily lives. Therefore, they regularly store and transfer personal data. Failure to secure devices and networks makes systems vulnerable to fraud, leading to massive losses and increased cybercrime.

Cybersecurity is one of the remedies to alleviate cybercrime. If organizations implement encryption as one of the means for cybersecurity, systems will be significantly more secure.
